FAQ

We have listed some of the most frequently asked questions at GTG.  If you cannot find your question on the list please do not hesitate to contact us via telephone or e-mail.

If you are unsure if physiotherapy will help your problem please contact us via e-mail, telephone or come to one of our clinics where one of our qualified physiotherapists will happily talk it through with you and answer any questions.

Sometimes the referrer may have a telephone or face to face conversation to find out if physiotherapy is likely to be of benefit for you or whether another form of treatment or healthcare professional may be of more benefit at that time.

These conversations and phone calls are not charged for.

GTG has a contract with The States of Guernsey to provide physiotherapy to patients who are referred for physiotherapy by a Consultant.

Your GP may have referred you to a Consultant and the Consultant refers you to physiotherapy. In this situation your physiotherapy would be provided under the terms of the contract and you will not be charged for it.

If you have physiotherapy that you have arranged yourself, or has been arranged via your GP, and you are not under the care of a Consultant for this problem, this will not be covered under the terms of the contract. As with other physiotherapy clinics and GP surgeries in Guernsey you will be charged by GTG for this physiotherapy.

The cost of the physiotherapy sessions vary depending on things like the length of the session and what type of problems you have, e.g. more complex problems may require longer or more sessions. If you are seen at home the treatment cost will be higher than a hospital or clinic session.

Yes, GTG is recognised as a provider of physiotherapy by most health insurance companies.

You are likely to need a referral from your GP in order to claim for your physiotherapy sessions.
Please check with your insurance provider directly what is required.

You can book yourself in for physiotherapy and pay for it without needing a GP referral.

You need a Consultant referral to be eligible for physiotherapy under the terms of the Contract in place with The States of Guernsey for provision of secondary healthcare.  A GP referral is not required to have physiotherapy, however it may be required by your health insurance provider if you wish to claim for your physiotherapy treatment on your insurance.

GTG can bill your insurance company directly for any treatment received but require an authorisation code from your insurance company and terms of the authorised treatment e.g. if there are limitations on the number of sessions.

You can contact your insurance company to get the code and authorisation prior to booking your physiotherapy appointment. You would need to provide this information before you receive your physiotherapy.

GTG offer clinic based appointments, hospital based appointments, hydrotherapy and home visits.  Where you will be seen for your appointment  is based on clinical need and circumstances.

We also see patients in Residential Homes or Nursing Homes. We can carry out sessions at the workplace, sports club, gyms or schools arranged jointly with the patient and the physio.

Yes, all of the Physiotherapists working at GTG are registered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The HCPC are the regulating body for health, psychological and social work professionals and were set up to protect the public.

The length of physiotherapy appointments varies. The initial assessment will usually last between 45 and 60 minutes but appointments for some problems may be longer or shorter.

The initial assessment is usually a one to one session with one of our qualified, registered physiotherapists.

Follow up sessions e.g. the sessions that take place after the initial first assessment are usually 30 to 40 minutes long but this can vary too.

At the first session you will be asked to fill out a short form with details of your general health and any issues.

The physiotherapist will assess you in a treatment room, hospital gym or ward depending on where your physio is taking place. They will continue to ask you about your health and the problem you have. Some of the physiotherapists will use computerised assessment forms and input information directly on to the computer.

Physiotherapists will often analyse your movement or palpate the problem area.

After the initial assessment the physiotherapist will talk to you about what they have found and what they think the best course of action will be. They can give you advice, exercises or help you to understand the problems that you are having.

Loose fitting and comfortable clothing is ideal. If you have a problem affecting your leg, knee, ankle or foot it could be useful to wear or bring shorts.

If you have a problem affecting your neck, back, shoulder, arm or hand it is useful to wear or bring a vest.

If you take any medications it is helpful to bring the list with you.

If your sessions are being funded by your health insurance company please bring the authorisation code and details of the company to your appointment.

You are welcome to have someone with you during the session.
